"It is a lovely photograph although I think it's title is a misnomer.  It probably should read a boxing platoon.  A boxing battalion (up to a 1000 men) would be too big for such a sport.  In the army or any other force for that matter, it is often the practice to gather all known boxers and the like together for combined training and they usually are allocated extra rations etc.  Matches are arranged between battalions, regiments and other military units for morale boosting troop entertainment.  It still goes on today."
