I
came across this while trawling for Worcester records. I found it interesting
and although it does not contain any information related to my family I thought
maybe someone on the list might find something of interest. I wonder what the
story is with the horse - see final notation.

Cardiffs West Bute Dock drownings in 1864 by Taryn Jones whos ggg uncle
William Rosser Jones perished. The Webmaster of recyclegen also lost a ancestor
in this tragedy his g g uncle John Flavin also lost his life,
William Rosser Jones in 1864. It says he was 12 years of age and was employed at Messrs Glass and Co. The wire-works are mentioned; I assume Messrs Glass and Co. was a wire-works? He drowned, along with six other boys, after playing on a raft at West Bute Dock Cardiff. In case anyone's interested, the drowned boys were:
William Rosser Jones, age 12 Green-Lane Roath John Parson, age 17, Sophie Street John Savage, aged 12 Green-Lane Roath Joseph Dyer, aged 12, Union Street Canton John Flavin, age 14, Bridge Street Thomas Crockett, aged 12, Eagle Inn Canton Henry Jones Board, age 11, Wellington Street Canton

Posted on the Glam list. Hello I am sending this via the list in case anyone else thinks they might have a connection to these poor boys. Thank you very much to Ms. Edwards for sending me the article - without her help I would not have been able to learn the full story behind my ggg uncle's death. The article is very long.
The Cardiff Time Friday June 3, 1864 Seven Boys Drowned in the West Bute Dock.
One of the most heartrending occurrences which has occurred for several years in this town took place this afternoon in the West Bute Dock, by which no fewer than seven lives have been sacrificed. For several weeks past, in consequence of the West Bute being closed a number of boys employed at the Wire-works, have been in the habit of amusing themselves at meal times on a raft of timber, which is kept in the West dock for the purpose of unloading timber vessels. During the dinner hour, some fourteen of these youths were amusing themselves upon this raft, and had managed by using their hands and pieces of wood to get into the centre of the dock. At this juncture the bell rang which summoned them to work, and in their anxiety to get on shore they all rushed to one side of the raft, to propel it faster. By the sudden motion the timbers turned over, and capsized the whole of the boys into the water. The scene which ensued was most heart-rending for although there were plenty of persons on the quay wall, they were unable to render any material and, as there were no boats in the dock. A few of the lads were good swimmers, and managed to get out of the water with little difficulty, but the greater number were totally unable to keep themselves above water. A young man named Edward Lloyd, acted in the most courageous manner. He sprang into the water and succeed in bringing on shore two or three of the poor lads, but in the last attempt he sank from sheer exhaustion and disappeared still clinging to the poor fellow he was endeavouring to save fortunately at this moment he had reached near the shore, and by means of grappling iron, and heroic conduct of a man named Merry, who jumped into the water and seized him, he was got out, although insensible. By great exertion on the pare of those present he gradually rallied. but for more than a hour his life was despaired of. This sad calamity spread quite a gloom over the town, and the greatest commiseration is felt for the parents and relatives. The following are the names of those who, in the midst of live and in the height of enjoyment, met wit a watery grave.
Rosser Jones, aged 12, Green-Lane Roath John Parson, aged 17, Sophie Street John Savage, aged 12, Green-Lane Roath Joesph Dyer, aged 12, Union Street Canton JOhn Flavin, aged 14, Bridge Street Thos Crockett, aged 12, Eagle Inn Canton Henry Jones Board, aged 11, Wellington Street Canton. The engineer of the wire works Mr W.M Rigley, and two other men named James Murray and Thos Ball exerted themselves most praiseworthy throughout this most painful event and it is said endeavoured to dissuade the boys from indulging in the dangerous amusement. The inquest will not be held until Monday; but the facts as above detailed, are we believe, substantially correct.
The Inquest The Coroner (R.L Reece, Esq.), on Monday morning commenced an inquest on the bodies of the seven boys who were drowned in the Bute West Dock on Saturday. The body of one of the victims, John Flavin, was viewed by the jury, after which the following evidence was given- Thomas John, Sworn, deposed: I live at 48 Bridge Street and am a carpenter. At 20 minutes before two on Saturday, the 28th, I was returning from dinner to my employment at Glass, Elliot and Co wire works, which are situated on the west side of the Bute West Dock. The deceased John Flavin, and all the other boys deceased, except Boyd, worked in the establishment of Messrs. Glass & Co. I saw four big boys, or young men coming across the West Dock to our (the West) side. They were standing on a timber stage, or flat which is used for carpenters to work, or to witness boats racing. It was about seven inches deep, or six or eight feet square, and consisted of boards nailed together. They had nothing in their hand, and propelled the flat by depressing its front with their feet. They came close to the quay wall on the West side. Then a number of little boys rushed on the flat. The water surface was about a foot or 18 inches below the coping stones. John Flavin was one of the boys. John Parson, Joesph Dyer, Rosser Jones. also deceased, were among those whom I noticed among these boys. I called to them to come back, or else they would be drowned one of the boys jumped back, and the others laughed at my fears, and remained on the flat. I called then to on of the young men I knew, named Edward Leary, who was busy trying to set the flat in motion, not to shake the flat, or they would be drowned. He was shaking the flat so violently, that I thought he was doing it to frighten the boys, rather than propel the flat. There was an edge around the stage about seven inches high and the water was washing over this. There were four young men on the flat, who had brought it across the dock. Their names were Edward Leary, Edward Lloyd, Thos Parry, and James Sullivan, who were all engaged in shaking the flat. By this means they propelled the flat away from the wall, and I was so fearful an accident would happen, that when it had got about ten feet out that I turned and went away into the works. Soon after in a few minutes, men came running in for ropes, saying that the boys had fallen into the water. The news so affected me that I fainted, and lay on the floor for about ten minutes. James Murray, Sworn, deposed: I am employed in the works of Glass, Elliott & Co; and live in the Seven Road, Canton on Saturday, at about half past one, I went out on the side of the dock, and saw a lot of our boys on the flat, which is used by the rowing club to get into and out of their boats, and has a wooden grating, to keep the feet dry, if the water should flow over the floor of the flat. There were no men on the flat when I saw it - only eight or none boys. It as close to the coping stone. I then saw the four men referred to by the last witness get on the flat, and turn the small boys out of it, all but Dyer, one of the deceased, who lay down on the flat and began to cry, and they could not entice him to go out. The men had two pieces of wood, which they used as paddles, and moved the flat out into the dock, here Leary and Lloyd stripped in order to bathe, and left their cloths in the flat. In about twenty minutes they got back in the flat again, and dressed themselves. They then paddled back to the coping stone, close to the works and the small boys whom they had previously turned out came back and got on the flat again. When they left the side of the dock again, there were 13 on it, including the men. Among them were all of deceased boys. The flat was then shoved away from the coping stone by one of the men, with a piece of wood The men then began to rock the flat in the water. Leary was the principal one in the rocking. I do not think they were trying to get to the other side, so much as for a bit of mischief to frighten the boys by rocking the flat. I saw the flat was filling with water and cried out that they would go down if they did not mind. Then as the water was coming in so fast, they all got to one side of the stage, Leary then saw the stage was sinking, and sprang into the water and swam ashore, a distance of 20 or 30 yards, about half way across the dock, the flat being nearly in the centre of the dock. Parry followed Leary's example. By that time the stage went down, and the other men and the little boys were all in the water. Sullivan kept himself afloat by swimming until the stage rose to the surface, and then pulled himself aboard it. Lloyd caught one of the little boys, and swam with him to the stage, where Sullivan pulled him in. Lloyd then went back after another boy, and rescued him., and then went after a third; but was to much exhausted to save him, and was himself very near sinking, when a boat came from the East side of the dock and pulled him up apparently helpless. He was taken to Hill's yard and a doctor fetched, by whom restorative measures were restored to which enabled him to revive, so as to be sent home, where he now lies under medical care. One of the boys Lloyd saved is named Morris Thomas; the other I do not know. The other boys by this time were sinking. I and the engine driver, (Thomas Ball), jumped into the water and swam to the spot, but none of the boys were then afloat and had they been, we could not have saved them, for we were so much exhausted by swimming with our clothes on, that we had hardly strength to get back to the side of the dock. Boats and drags were soon fetched and the bodies of the boys recovered it was 20 minutes to four before the last body was found. Dr Buist and Mr Paine's assistant endeavoured to restore the first two bodies that came out, Board and Dyer, but after an hours labour they found it impossible to recover them. Leary who made no efforts to save the boys, was the strongest man, and the best swimmer of the lot. He was the one who did the most in rocking the flat. James Sullivan, one of the escaped men, and the two rescued boys, Morris Thomas ad Benjamin Thomas, have entered the room. In reply to questions from the Coroner, Sullivan said that he did not help to rock the flat, and had remonstrated with Leary and Lloyd from doing so; nor did Parry rock the flat. He Sullivan had a paddle and was trying to get the flat back to the side of the dock. The boys corroborated Sullivan's statement that he had tried to dissuade the others from rocking the flat. The Coroner said, it appeared from the evidence that Leary's conduct was censurable and he ought to be reprimanded. The cause of death had been sufficiently explained, but if the jury thought it advisable, they might adjourn the inquest for the purpose of having Leary brought before them. The jury expressed a wish to have Leary before them, and the inquiry was adjourned to seven pm of the sameday for that purpose. The inquest was resumed in the evening, when Leary was examined. He stated that he rocked the flat only to deter the boys from getting on it, and that one of the boys pushed the flat away from the quay against his wish. As for his jumping out an swimming ashore without offering help to any of the boys, he said he was "Struck Blind" so that it was all he could do to save himself. After a few words from the Coroner, eulogising the conduct of Lloyd, and severely censuring that of Leary, the jury returned the verdict of "Accidental Death".
