The Welch/Welsh Regiment.
Amended translation. The regimental motto, "Gwell Angau Na Gwarth" (Rather Death than Dishonour) was composed by Lady Llanover, the wife of the Lord-Lieutenant in 1864.
Gwell Angua na Chywilydd - Death rather than Dishonour (wrong translation) The 5th Battalion ( Territorials)The Welch/Welsh Regiment.1914 1918 period. Gallipoli , Egypt,Palestine.
I will be dropping titbits about this regiment over the next few days as I hope it may be of interest to some of the Glam listers. My Grandfather served as a C.S.M and was one of many who were decorated for their valour, maybe the notes I have from his regiments booklet may help some of you.
The spelling of the word "Welsh" was altered to "Welch" by Army order 56 dated February 1920, under which Army Order all Battalions of the Regiment ( were ordered to regulate the designation to "WELCH REGIMENT" They will called the Welsh Regiment while talking about them up to 1919. "A gallant band who left their homes in our Welsh valleys and dared a World in arms, that Britain might still be free." T O Jones Pontyridd Oct 1920.
Part 2 The Welch/Welsh Regiment. early period 1859.
1859. The Volunteer Corps were formed in the county of Glamorgan, various towns raised their own corps which were independent of each other. Shortly after these separate corps were grouped under Central Authorities each corps or detachment retaining a large measure of independence. The group with which we are concerned and which the Welsh Regiment claims a connection, was styled The 2nd Glamorganshire Rifle Volunteer Corps, the senior Administration officer being Colonel Godfrey T. Clark, of Talygarn. In the year 1880 this Corps was formed into a Battalion bearing the same name, and under the Command of Lieut-Colonel C.W.David. The year 1888 the Volunteer battalions were affiliated with the Line Regiments and the 2nd Glamorganshire Rifle Volunteers become the well-known 3rd Vol, Battalion, THE WELSH REGIMENT, which on formation was commanded by Colonel Pearson R Cresswell, with Colonel G.T.Clerk as its Honorary Colonel.

The third Battalion was recruited and maintained in Cardiff and its neighbourhood, Pontpridd, the Rhondda, Aberdare and Merthyr valleys and Dowlais. The Headquarters being at the Drill Hall Dumfries Place Cardiff. The vitality of the unit, even in its early stages, is in evidence by the records of the Shooting Competitions and other Military activities in which it was engaged, and to which it at all times gained distinction. The Welch/Welsh Regiment early days,1899-1902.
The Battalion contributed together with the other Volunteer Battalions of the Welsh Regiment to the Service Companies sent out to take part in the South African War in 1899-1902.
In 1906, a re- arrangement took place of the Companies which then formed the 2nd and 3rd Volunteer Battalions The Welsh Regiment and the 3rd Glamorganshire Rifle Volunteers, which latter Unit had retained its old designation.
Under this arrangement the seven Companies of the 3rd V.B Welsh at Cardiff and Penarth were transferred to the 2nd Battalion, and the Headquarters of the 3rd V.B Welsh was removed to Pontypridd.
The Command of the 3rd Battalion devolved upon Colonel D.R.Lewis, V.D of Merthyr, while the 2nd Battalion remained under the command of Colonel Joseph Gaskell,C.B.E, V.D.,T.D,D.L.whose name is mentioned for his long and meritorious service with the parent Battalion.
At the close of the Volunteer System the Battalion was the strongest numerically of all the Battalion components of the Regiment with a strength of 1,635 out of an establishment of 1,744. The title of the Unit was then 3rd Volunteer ( double) Battalions The Welsh Regiment.
It was now the second largest Volunteer Battalion in the UK the first being The Queens Edinburgh Rifles.
In 1908 under the Territorial scheme introduced by Lord Haldane the 3rd Volunteer Welsh Regiment was again divided, and from this division emanated the 5th ( Territorial) Battalion The Welsh Regiment.

The area of the New Territorial Battalion comprised the Merthyr and Aberdare Valleys, and Ponypridd. The headquarters being at Pontypridd. Commanded by A.P James, V.D,D.L, of Taffs Well, with Lord Aberdare,V.D, as its Honorary Colonel.
In 1909 the Battalion received its Colours at the hands of the late King Edward V11 at Windsor, which for the duration of the War, were placed in Llandaff Cathedral.
Colonel James retired in 1912, and was succeeded by Lieutenant- Colonel Morgan Morgan, V.D,.of Mountain Ash who was in command when the great call to arms came in 1914.
The Call !!!
August 1914, the Battalion was under-going its annual training at Portmadoc, and immediately its move to the War Station was carried out.
On mobilization, the strength of the Battalion was 24 Officers and 813 other ranks, but in a few days many hundreds of applications were received from all classes of the South Wales community to fill up the few vacancies which were open.
The Recruiting for the 5th Battalion was maintained by the establishment on mobilization of a Depot at Pontypridd. Commanded by Captain W.Dowdeswell. but was taken over in December 1914, by Captain T.E.Malyon.
The Battalion remained at Fort Scoveston, Pembrokeshire, its War Station, for a few days only and then went to the new Camp at Hearson, a few miles away.
Ref Historical notes of the Welsh Regiment.
The Welch/Welsh Regiment early days Mobilization 1914.
Sept 1914. At Camp Hearson in anticipation of a possible German raid on the West Coast, it was employed-in conjunction with the rest of the South Wales Infantry Brigade-in making a series of redoubts and in Outpost Work.
In October 1914 it left Hearson and took over the Haven Forts from the Brecknock Battalion on their departure for Aden.
November 1914 the Battalion was moved to Tunbridge Wells, where it was for the time being a Unit in the South Lancs Brigade under the Command of Brig-General Macfie, V.D. It was a period of marching and Company training. Each half-battalion also put in a two weeks turn on the construction of the outer London Defences at Lenham.
January 1915 the organisation of the Battalion was changed from Eight Company system to a Four company system.
Tunbridge Wells was the first town outside of Wales at which the Battalion had been stationed, there and later in Scotland and at Bedford all ranks evoked much praise, amongst the inhabitants.
It was February 1915 the Battalion was moved to the east coast of Scotland, where it was stationed in a scattered district round the Firth of Forth of Tay, and garrisoned the block- house system of defences, which was established there.
By this time the a Second Line Battalion known as the 2/5th Welsh Regiment had been formed, under the command of Colonel A.P.James, V.D.,D.L The 2/5th became practically a draft-finding Unit.
Early 1915, Third Lines were formed to all Territorial Units for the specific purpose of training new men as feeders to the First lines in the field and the 3/5th, afterwards the 5th ( Reserve) Battalion came into existence, and was commanded by Major G.A.Evans,T.D., and later Lieut,-Col. Phillips,T.D.untill the Unit was merged with other Territorial Reserve Units of the Welsh Regiment into a Composite Reserve Battalion, known as the 4th (Res) Battalion The Welsh Regiment under the command of Lieut-Colonel W.Bramwell Jones, T.D.
April 1915 the first line Battalion ( with which we are from now on concerned) was ordered to join the 53rd (Welsh) Division and moved down from Scotland to Royston, Herts, where it became part of the 159th Infantry Brigade, the other Units of the Brigade being the 4th Welsh , 4th Cheshire's and the 7th Cheshire's.
The 159th Brigade was commanded by Brig- General E.A.Cowens.
Ref Historical notes of the Welch/Welsh Regiment.
The Welch/Welsh Regiment early days Mobilization 1915.
April/May 1915. After a fortnight under canvas on Royston Common the Brigade marched to Bedford some 25 miles distant halting for the night en route at Biggleswade. This was the first considerable route march the Battalion had been called upon to do since Tumbridge Wells." Stick it, the Welsh" was now a adopted slogan said originally by a Captain Mark Haggard just before his death, and the Battalion invoked the inspiration of its old Adjutant then and in many trying day subsequently.
The 53 rd ( Welsh) Division was composed of the following Brigades:-158th, 159th, 160th, and was commanded by Major-General The Hon. J.E.Lindley.
July 1915, just twelve months after mobilization, the Division received orders to proceed Overseas, and all ranks looked forward to taking a real share in the "Great Adventure"
The devotion of Major H.H. Southey and Captain R.T.Evans who relinquished Staff appointments in order to proceed overseas with the Battalion, is a striking instance of spirit which permeated all ranks.
Major Southey was not allowed to accompany the Battalion at that time, but within a few weeks his wish was gratified, and both these Officers subsequently laid down their lives on the field of honour.
On the 17th July 1915, the Battalion embarked at Devonport on the S.S."Huntsgreen" under sealed orders, this vessel being the old German ship " Derflinger" interned at the outbreak of the hostilities, and now re-christened.
The only clue to its destination was the issue of the eastern kit.
Ref Historical notes of the Welch/Welsh Regiment.
The Welch/Welsh Regiment, Gallipoli.
Devonport sailing east to Alexandria, 17th July 1915."SS Huntsgreen" The voyage east was uneventful, with the exception perhaps, of the list which developed as a result of being so hurriedly despatched as to allow no time for the cargo to be properly stowed.
No shore leave in Alexandria was given and the ship proceeded to Port Said.
SS " Huntsgreen" accompanied by other transports steamed for the Gallipoli Peninsula, where she arrived on the 5th August 1915 being the day on which the original Suvia bay landing was made.
The vessels laid off Mudros and Imbros a conference was taken on the morning of the 6th August on board the head-quarters vessel.
Colonel Morgan Morgan received orders that his Battalion would form a Vanguard of the 159th Brigade in the landing at Suvia bay on the evening of Sunday. the 8th August in support of the 10th and the 13th Divisions, who had carried out the heroic landing on the 5th August 1915.
By 2am the morning of the 9th the Battalion had all gained the shore and utterly weary, they sank down to rest and to await what dawn had in store.
By the foresight of the C.O two days extra rations had been requisitioned from the "Huntsgreen" At 9am , orders were received to move off in a northerly direction to make way on the shore for supporting Battalions, the move being hastened by brisk shelling from the Turkish Artillery whose ranging however was not good. After proceeding for half a mile, the direction was changed due east, and wooded tops of three small hills were given as the line of advance.
Two Companies were detailed to support the left of the 33rd Brigade while the other two Companies proceeded on the original line of advance.
Colonel Morgan Morgan , with C and D Companies remained to cover the flank of the 33rd Brigade, while A and B Companies under major W Dowdeswell, advanced in Artillery formation across the Anarfarta Plain, a treeless waste of sand and scrub, to the accompaniment of screeching and hissing shells from the surrounding hills.
The broiling suns rays poured down mercilessly on them, but up to this point the Battalion had been more or less free from Casualties. Now however they came under a terrible cross fire, so deadly that by the evening of the 10th August the strength of the Battalion had dwindled to 12 Officers and 420 other ranks, C Company being practically annihilated.
The following Officers lost their lives. Capt, R:T Evans, " D.P Robathan, Lieut R.S.Evans. " W.D.R.Evans. " E.A. Morgan, Lieut, H.E.Osborne, 2/Lieut A,J.A:Britton. " F.W.M.Dunn, " O.C. Winstanley. all who fell at Gallipoli Peninsula.
I am sorry I don't have the names of those who died from the ranks, the WAR DEPT will I am sure have them.
To the sorrow of the whole Battalion, Colonel Morgan broke down under the strain of incessant anxiety long continued. he was succeeded by Major Dowdeswell who retained command until invalided in the middle of October 1915. He in turn was succeeded by Major H.H.Southey.and after this the 4th and the 5th Battalions were amalgamated.
The survivors alone know the measure of the suffering during their first three weeks in Gallipoli.
From Gallipoli into Egypt.
The Welch/Welsh Regiment Egypt.
From Gallipoli the Battalion was taken to Egypt, and some months were spent at Sollum and other places in the western desert. Drafts from England arrived from time to time until a sufficient strength was got together to warrant the separation of the two amalgamated Battalions, and 1/5th became again a separate entity. Active service conditions prevailed in the western desert yet no action was seen.
Major H.H. Southey of the 5th and Lieut- Colonel Pridham commanded for different periods, the latter dying of fever at Ismailia in December ,1917.
The 53rd (Welsh) , Division was now commanded by Lieutenant- General A.G.Dallas, and the 159th Brigade by Brigadier-General J.H.du B.Travers. C.B., who curiously enough commanded in 1913 the south Wales Infantry Brigade, of which the 5th Welsh then formed part.
First Battle of Gaza.
August 1916 the 53rd Welsh Division were withdrawn by boat from the Western Desert to Alexandria and from there taken by train to the banks of the Suez Canal at Ismailia. Here the Division was re-organised and most strenuous training was undertaken- days of hard work which will never be forgotten by those who were there.
December 1916 the Turks were at Romani and the Welsh Division commenced its long trek across the desert of the Sinai Peninsular. Whilst on the way to the front line Romani was taken by mounted troops and the 54th Division. Christmas 1916 was spent at Romani, which soon became a big military centre.
Before long the Welsh Division passed through the 52nd division ( Scottish) and became the leading Infantry. The Turk was at last brought within fighting distance. A battle was imminent on a front running from Khan Yunus to Shellal, when on the eve of a serious attack, the Turks left their formidable and elaborately entrenched positions and retired upon Gaza.
The 24th March 1917 found the Welsh Division at Deir el Belah, a few miles South of Gaza, the scene of the great battle of the 26th March.
A great battle it was- a brilliant example of courage, dash and endurance. This action was undertaken solely by the Welsh Division, together with mounted troops. It may be more satisfactory if special orders are quoted.
" The G.O.C. wishes the troops who took part in the fighting at Gaza to know his admiration of, and his pride in, the gallantry and determination shown by them in the recent operations. The 53rd (Welsh)Division accomplished a magnificent feat in taking the Aliel Muntar position at Gaza- etc etc. They did all that was asked of them , carrying the enemy's positions in the face of most determined opposition and regardless of the cost.etc etc and the G.O.C went on to say," a Brigade which can face such heavy losses without losing morale, equals the very best spirit of our old regular brigades" The 5th after an all-night approach march took part in the attack upon the famous hill Ali el Muntar, which was on the right of the line, and suffered heavy casualties during the strenuous few hours. The town was quickly put in a state of defence in case of counter attack, but as is well known, the troops were withdrawn during the night, leaving Gaza to the Turk once again.
The Battalion has every reason to be proud of the part it took in this glorious if unfortunate day.
The second battle of Gaza happened a month later the 5th Welsh on this occasion being on the extreme left of the British forces. However Gaza defied the British forces.
Next push Palestine.
Ref Historical notes of the Welch/Welsh Regiment.
The Welch/Welsh Regiment Palestine.
Field- Marshal Lord Allenby assumed command of the Expeditionary Force in June 1917. More troops, arrived more guns, train- loads of grenades, steel helmets, and all manner of warlike materials were rushed out to Egypt and onto the front.
General Allenbys first great offensive started on the 31st October 1917, by the Welsh, London and mounted troops. capturing Beersheba and the high ground at the southern end of the mountains of Judea. Here again the 5th Welsh did some hard fighting, especially at Khuweilfeh, where many casualties occurred. The push and subsequent stand of the Welsh Division in the face of many determined counter attacks, launched by great masses of the enemy, were duly appreciated by the Commander-in-Chief, who refers to it in his despatch of the 16th December,1917, as follows ;-
" The 53rd (Welsh) has again had very severe fighting on the 6th Nov. Their attack at dawn on Tel el Khuweilfeh was successful, and though they were driven off a hill by counter attack, they retook it and captured another hill which much improved their position"
" The Turkish losses in this area were very heavy indeed, and the stubborn fighting of the 53rd (Welsh)Division, Imperial camel Corps, and part mounted troops during November 2nd to 6th drew in and exhausted the Turkish reserves and paved the way for the attack on Sheria. The 53rd (Welsh) Division took several hundred prisoners and some guns during this fighting."
The Turkish trenches were continuous from Gaza to Beersheba a truly formidable system, with many well wired-in strong points holding commanding positions. The success of the push in the mountains by the Welsh made it possible for the greater part of the Turks defences to be taken on the flank-parts even in rear-and what is more, Gaza fell, and a great sweep by mounted troops, followed by infantry, took the British Front line northwards on a level with Jerusalem.
The Welsh remained in the mountains, and in due time proceeded northwards passing Dhaheriyeh, Hebron, Solomon's Pools and Bethlehem, and eventually took up positions south and east of the Holy City, the 5th Welsh capturing and occupying the Mount of Olives, other troops being to the west.
The day which must inevitably be written large in history found the 5th Welsh under the walls of Jerusalem, and at 11.30 am on the 9th December 1917 the very first British guard to be mounted at the Jaffa Gate was furnished by No.11 Platoon of C Company of the 5th Welsh ; a great honour for the Battalion. The keys to the Holy City were taken out by the Authorities and handed to the G.O.C. 60th Division.
The first formed body of troops to enter Jerusalem was an advanced guard detailed by Capt F.S.Harris,O.C, C Company, under the charge of Lieutenant ( later Capt)H.V.Jones,M.C. This too, was a signal honour for the Battalion. "It must always be with pride that we can look back upon the important part played by our Battalion upon this historic day, for it is certain that the Western Front has faded away, the taking of Jerusalem, after four hundred years of Turkish rule, will be an outstanding event in the worlds history.
Christmas was spent just north of the Holy city, and it may be of interest to record the terrible weather which was experienced. The troops had become accustomed to hot weather, lack of water and hot heavy sand to walk upon, but snow, sleet, rain, icy cold nights and heavy sticky mud were experienced, many suffering from frost- bitten feet in consequence.
Ref Historical notes of the Welch/Welsh Regiment.
The Welch/Welsh Regiment 1918 to demobilisation.
During the first three months of 1918, continual fighting was in progress. Village after village and ridge after ridge was wrestled from the Turk, the 5th being particularly concerned in the taking of Bireh ( Bethel), Ramallah,Taiyebeh, and Kefr Malik. Towards the end of March, the 159th brigade trekked some thirty miles to take part in the operations of the 75th Division, and the 5th Welsh spent exciting times at Berukin and other places in the Wadi Ballut. These operations over, the Brigade returned to the front line on the Nablus road about twenty miles north of Jerusalem, where it remained for some months, the 5th taking turns in the line, working behind the line, and " at rest".
From the week prior to the first battle of Gaza ( March ,1917, to the end of June 1918), the 5th was commanded by Lieutenant-Colonel H.R.Bowen,D.S.O., an Officer of the Essex Regiment, though of Welsh associations. it can be said that this Officer commanded the Battalion during the great bulk of its fighting days. Colonel Bowen was wounded for the third time at Gaza and, on the breaking up of the Unit on the 30th June,1918, he proceeded to France. On the 1st July 1918, the 4th and 5th were once again amalgamated, the command falling to Lieutenant Colonel A. P. Hohler,D.S.O. of the Middlesex Regiment. These two Battalions remained amalgamated for the rest of the war, and the new Unit was known as the 4/5th Welsh. It took a leading part in General Allenby'final push in September, 1918, taking , amongst other positions, Kew Hill , Hindhead and Kusrah.
At the end of the month the 53rd ( Welsh )Division was concentrated in the Sinjil-Tel Asur area, and was marched down through the mountains to Ramieh and Ludd.
The Turks having been completely routed-90,000 prisoners being captured-every thing pointed to the Welsh Division being sent to another Theatre of War. Warm clothing was issued; much "Gas Drill" was undertaken, and from Ramleh a move was made to Sidi Bishr near Alexandria, where a number of transports were lying in the harbour.
The Armistice between the Allies and Turkey came into force on the 31st October 1918, and on the 11th November 1918 the Armistice on the Western Front was signed. The transports sailed away from Alexandria empty, and in due course demobilisation commenced. During the campaigns in Egypt and Palestine, the following Officers laid down their lives on service with the 5th battalion:-
Colonel G.F.Pridham, Major H.H.Southey, Major A.T.de M.Martin Captain C.Davis, Captain T.G.L.Phillips, Captain W.L.Read, Captain F.E.Williams,attached to the RAF. Lieutenant O.R.Frankenstein, Lieutenant H.S. Dowdeswell, Lieutenant D.C.S. Thomas.
While on other fronts the following Officers of the Battalion made the supreme sacrifice.
Capt. T.C.H.Berry, " T.W.David, " A.T.Davies, " E.T.Tremellen, Liet, D. L.Jenkins, " T.S.Thomas, 2/Lieut. W.Harrington, " E.S.Jenkins, " J.E.Mathias, " J.H.Mathias, " F.G.Notten, " L.G.T.Thomas, Rev, Enoch Davies, C.F.
The Official Records show that 319 rank and file of the 5th Battalion gave their lives, but it is feared that even this figure does not represent the total losses which the Unit suffered, as many men enlisted were, by the exigencies of the service, afterwards transferred to other Corps.
The glory of their memory will remain as long as the rivers of gallant Wales shall flow to the sea. Such is the outline-very brief and with but little detail of the doings of the 5th Battalion The Welch regiment during the Great War.
Colonel Hohler's farewell order to the 4/5th Welsh is well worth recording:-
" Lieutenant Colonel A. Hohler, on vacating command of the 4/5th Battalion The Welsh Regiment wishes to thank all Officers, Warrant Officers, N.C.O.'s and Men for the way they have played the game." " The career of the Battalion has been short and glorious. and he is sure that they all feel as he does, proud to have belonged to a Unit with such a record." He wishes them the best of luck, and will always look back on the last six months, not as spent in Command of a Battalion, but spent with nine hundred of the best friends any man could wish".
Dedicated to my Grandfather Albert Crossley Jones D.C.M citation reads. " For conspicuous gallantry and Devotion to duty. He showed splendid qualities of leadership and Courage on all occasions, and set an excellent example to his men" Member of the 1/5th Battalion the Welsh Regiment died May 4th 1926 Mountain Ash Glam.
I would like to thank the Glamorgan listers for the interest and patience that they have shown, towards my very long thread.
Ref Historical notes of the Welch/Welsh Regiment.
Questions answered by Glyn Davies,
In 1831 Royal assent was given for the 41st Regiment of Foot to be styled "The 41st Regiment or the WELCH Regiment of Infantry".
In 1881, as a result of the Cardwell Army Reforms, the 41st (The Welch) was amalgamated with the 69th (South Lincolnshire) to form the WELSH Regiment.
The 'old guard' of the regiment were adamant that they wanted to retain the old spelling, although it was not until 1920 that they persuaded the War Office to agree with them.
A War Office letter dated 27th January 1920, gave approval for the spelling 'WELCH' to be used in all matters relating to the regiment, a change confirmed by Army Order 56 of February 1920.
The regimental motto, "Gwell Angau Na Gwarth" (Rather Death than Dishonour) was composed by Lady Llanover, the wife of the Lord-Lieutenant in 1864.
The abbreviation "V.B" stands for Volunteer Battalion. The abbreviation "C.E" can stand for any one of three alternatives, namely: - Canadian Engineers Chief Engineer Control Engineer
I have never seen it used in conjunction with the prefix "V.B" so I cannot express an authoritative opinion. However, under the given circumstances the first option appears to be the most likely.
The eight locally raised battalions (13th, 14th, 15th, 16th, 17th, 18th, 19th and 23rd) were formed under the authority of the Welsh National Executive Committee. In most cases the formation of these units was sponsored by individuals and local organisations. The recruits were predominantly from the Welsh Counties. But this does not mean that all the recruits were Welsh by birth or that sons of Welsh parentage living outside of Wales did not find their way into the regiment.
